A - AN - [Nothing] / Singular Countable Nouns

1.- A/An are used to say "one" in a correct gramatical manner. They can only be used with countable nouns in the singular (A/AN precede these nouns or their adjectives).

2.- A is used to precede words starting with a consonant.

3.- An is used to precede words starting with a vowel.

4.- Sports are not countable. [Nothing] is the right option.

5.- Plurals are not singular. [Nothing] is the right option.

6.- When adjectives are alone, they are not countable. [Nothing] is the right option.

7.- A/AN is always used with careers (names of the different kinds of jobs).

8.- Singular Countable Nouns starting with a silent consonant (non pronounced letter) are considered to start with a vowel (for instance hour -> an hour)

9.- Singular Countable Nouns starting with a vowel pronounced as /iu/ (only e and u) are considered to start with a consonant (for instance European country -> a European country / university -> a university)
